About Medical School HQ
Dr. Ryan Gray founded Medical School HQ after going through the ups and downs of the premed journey with little guidance. He was determined to make the application process easier for aspiring students.
Over the past decade, he has empowered hundreds of thousands of students through his podcasts, YouTube channels, and the Mappd software platform.
Realizing he couldn’t personally support every student who sought his help, Dr. Gray brought together a team of top-tier medical school admissions experts, including former Directors of Admissions and Admissions Officers.
Today, our dedicated advising team offers personalized, 1-on-1 guidance on every aspect of the premed process, including the whole application cycle if that’s what you need.
F.A.Q.
How Do I Know How Many Hours I Need?
That’s the best part of our new hour-based bundles! It’s completely customized to YOU.
Most students sign up for 10-20 hours. The best thing is, because we don’t have complicated packages, and every thing is based on hours, you can add more hours (at a discount) as you go!
Our recommendation is to set up a one-time 20-min consultation call (see above) with one of our team members and find out what may work best for you.
When Should I Enroll?
We encourage you to enroll early as we can only take on a limited number of students. Our application cycle spots are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and your payment secures your spot.
Most students start working with us 3-6 months before the application cycle opens. That means December-March or so before the application cycle starts. Based on availability, we will be glad to start working with you as soon as you’re ready!
How Does Essay Editing Work?
When working with our expert advisors, the “time” that gets used is time you spend with your advisor on calls and time they are reviewing your essays “offline.” We call that “written-only feedback.” 6,000 characters or less uses 30-minutes of time and 20,000 characters or less uses 60-minutes. Most of our students do their essay feedback during their virtual, live sessions. It’s up to you.
What Would Each Hour Bundle Look Like?
The best part about our hours-based bundles is that they can shaped in any way you want. Take these two 20-hour bundle students:
- Future Doctor J.D. Dorian
- 3 hours of general premed guidance (including things like building his school list) because he’s a first-generation student without any understanding of the process
- 5 hours of personal statement and activity feedback and editing because he had other help
- 3 hours of email support because he needs a lot of reassurance about everything he’s doing
- 4 hours of secondaries because he had some outside help
- 4 hours of mock interview prep because he was nervous about his ability to answer the questions
- 1 hour of discussing different acceptances and financial aid offers
- Future Doctor Elliot Reid
- 2 hours of general premed guidance (including things like building his school list) because she’s a little more familiar with the process
- 7 hours of personal statement and activity feedback and editing because she didn’t have any other help
- 1 hours of email support because she didn’t have many questions and wanted to focus on other parts of her application
- 6 hours of secondaries because she didn’t have any other help
- 3 hours of mock interview prep because she was a little more confident in her abilities
- 1 hour of discussing different acceptances and financial aid offers
You can see that both students covered the same parts of the application, but in different ratios based on each of their strengths and weaknesses. This is why we’ve switched to hours-based bundles.
These are just example scenarios. You can use your time however you specifically need.
Should I Wait Until I Get My MCAT Score?
Probably Not.
If you’re taking your MCAT in March or April of the year you are applying and don’t start working on your application with us until April or May, you’re going to be very far behind in the process.
Writing a great primary application takes a couple of months of going back and forth with our advisors and taking time away to reflect. There are also LORs to collect, school lists to build, and so much more!
Check out our FAQ about delaying an application as well.
Can I Defer/Delay My Hours
Yes. There are many reasons to defer/delay (pause) working with our advisors. The most common reason is that a student doesn’t get the score they wanted on the MCAT. In that case, the hours not used from the package will roll over for the next application cycle, and the student can pick up working with their advisor from there.
The work that was already accomplished doesn’t go to waste! All of the hard work building a school list, reflecting on their premed journey, and writing essays is still useful for the next application cycle.
What is the Difference Between this and Application Academy?
Application Cycle Coaching is one-on-one advising with one of our premier medical school application experts, whereas Application Academy is group advising. If you purchase 1-on-1, the hours that you purchase will be spent with that one advisor. A purchase of 10 hours or more will automatically include Application Academy at no extra cost to you, as a supplement to your 1-on-1 advising.
