About Columbia University Roy and Diana Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons

Overview

Columbia University Roy and Diana Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is a 4-year MD-granting program. It traces its roots back to King’s College, which was established in 1754. Columbia offers students the opportunity to gain their education in one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the US. There are over 70 clubs for students to be involved in at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Around 32 percent of students go abroad at some point, and nearly 34 percent take an extra year for either research or to finish a dual degree. There are opportunities for students to be involved in the community through Columbia Student Medical Outreach, Homeless Medical Partnership, the Harm Reduction Clinic, Medical for LGBTQI Youth, Asylum Clinic, and others.

The mission of Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) is to prepare future graduates to be leaders and role models in patient care, medical research, education, and health-care policy. Their experiences at P&S will enable them to shape the future and set the standards for medicine throughout the United States and the world. Their guided exposure and training will allow them to exhibit the highest principles of humanism and professionalism in their responsibilities to their patients, to their community, and to society.

The School of Medicine will be recognized by its faculty, students, graduates and patients and by faculty members in other schools of medicine and research universities as one of the nation’s premier institutions for research, training and patient care. Excellence in each of its primary missions—education, clinical care, and basic, transnational and clinical research—is essential to this recognition.
