Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine Review
About Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine
Overview
The Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that matriculated its first class in 2009. Geisinger Commonwealth has a focus on the student and emphasizes that the patient is the center of medicine. The School of Medicine has four regional campuses in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Danville, and Sayre. The Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine has two unique programs for students. One program, the Family Centered Experience Program, pairs each first-year student with a family living with a chronic or debilitating disease—students meet with their families regularly. Students also participate in the Experiential Learning Community, which places students within a specific community for an extended period of time to complete a Longitudinal Community Health Intervention Project. The Geisinger faculty is supportive in making sure that if a student wants to do research, they will be able to find a willing mentor.
Mission
Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine educates aspiring physicians and scientists to serve society using a community-based, patient-centered, interprofessional and evidence-based model of education that is committed to inclusion, promotes discovery and utilizes innovative techniques.
