Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine Review

About Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine

Overview

The Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that matriculated its first class in 2009. Geisinger Commonwealth has a focus on the student and emphasizes that the patient is the center of medicine. The School of Medicine has four regional campuses in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Danville, and Sayre. The Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine has two unique programs for students. One program, the Family Centered Experience Program, pairs each first-year student with a family living with a chronic or debilitating disease—students meet with their families regularly. Students also participate in the Experiential Learning Community, which places students within a specific community for an extended period of time to complete a Longitudinal Community Health Intervention Project. The Geisinger faculty is supportive in making sure that if a student wants to do research, they will be able to find a willing mentor.

Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine educates aspiring physicians and scientists to serve society using a community-based, patient-centered, interprofessional and evidence-based model of education that is committed to inclusion, promotes discovery and utilizes innovative techniques.

The School of Medicine will be recognized by its faculty, students, graduates and patients and by faculty members in other schools of medicine and research universities as one of the nation’s premier institutions for research, training and patient care. Excellence in each of its primary missions—education, clinical care, and basic, transnational and clinical research—is essential to this recognition.
