Overview
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that matriculated its first class in 2016. The School was built to provide healthcare in a region riddled with health disparities and to improve the health outcomes for the people of RGV. The curriculum at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine is given through multiple different modes of instruction, including problem-based learning, cases, lab sessions, and flipped classroom sessions. In hopes of supporting students, UTRGV separates students into Academic Houses. These houses exist to creative supportive relationships with faculty, friendship, and wellness for medical students. Sessions for the Academic Houses are mandatory.
Mission
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine uses innovative, competency-based medical education to train the next generation of physicians who are committed to improving the lives and well-being of their communities through innovative research and compassionate, patient-centered care, as well as biomedical scientists who will lead the charge in advancing research on diseases such as diabetes and infectious diseases that affect the Rio Grande Valley and beyond.
