Which package should I choose?
It depends on where you are in the cycle and how much of it you want covered.
- Primary Application — you are starting from a blank page and want your primary strategized, written and submit-ready.
- Secondary Application — your primary is already in, and you are staring down twenty schools’ worth of secondary prompts.
- Comprehensive — you want one advisor from your first strategy call through interviews, waitlists and acceptance offers.

What is the real difference between Primary and Comprehensive?
Primary Application ends when it’s submission-ready. Comprehensive keeps going.
Most students underestimate what comes after they hit submit. Secondaries arrive in a flood, often twenty or more, most within a two-week window in July. Interview invitations show up with a week’s notice. Waitlist letters need answering.
Comprehensive covers all of it with the advisor who already knows your file, plus mock interviews with recordings and written debriefs, update letters and letters of intent, waitlist strategy, and help comparing offers when they come in.
I bought Primary. Can I add secondaries or interviews later?
Yes, at any point in the cycle.
One thing worth knowing now, because it is the part students are surprised by later: adding a package early is what keeps you with the same advisor. A few days after you start, we will send you a note with a date on it. Add the Secondary package by that date and your current advisor is guaranteed to be the one editing your secondaries. After it, we will still match you with an excellent advisor — but which one depends on who has capacity.
If you already know you want your secondaries covered, Comprehensive guarantees the same advisor for the whole cycle.
What if I only need mock interviews?
Mock interviews come with the Comprehensive package — recorded, each followed by a written debrief. If interviews are genuinely the only thing you need, we sell them separately on our Mock Interviews page.
What if I am not applying this year?
These packages are built for the cycle you are applying in. If you are a year or more out — still building clinical hours, still choosing courses, still deciding whether to apply at all — Premed Pathway advising is the better fit. It is designed for the work that happens before an application exists, and starting there is usually what makes the application year go smoothly.
When should I enroll?
Earlier than feels necessary. Most students start with us three to six months before the application opens — roughly December through March.
We also cap how many students we take each cycle, because an advisor stretched across too many applications is not the advisor you want reading your personal statement. Spots go first-come, and your payment is what holds one.
Should I wait until I get my MCAT score?
Almost certainly not.
If you test in March or April and wait for the score before starting, you begin writing in May — and by then you are already behind. A strong primary takes weeks of drafting, stepping away, and coming back with fresh eyes. On top of that there are letters to request, a school list to build, and activity descriptions to write.
Your score changes your school list. It does not change your story, your activities, or your personal statement. Start on the parts that do not depend on it.
It is already late in the cycle. Is it too late to get help?
No. We pick students up mid-cycle every year. If your primary is submitted and secondaries are piling up, the Secondary Application package is built for exactly that moment. If interview invitations are arriving and you have never done a mock interview, that is what Comprehensive’s interview work is for.
What we will not do is tell you to rush a weak primary out the door because the calendar says so.
What if I decide to apply next cycle instead?
Your Comprehensive package carries forward. This happens most often when an MCAT score comes back lower than hoped, and it is usually the right call.
If working with us on the Primary Application package, we’ll just keep working with you and you’ll be mostly done for next year! None of the work is wasted. The school list, the reflection, the personal statement drafts, the activity descriptions — all of it is still yours next year.
How do I get started, and how does advisor matching work?
Choose your package and check out. What happens next depends on which package you bought.
Primary and Secondary Application. You fill out a profile — your background, your timeline, how you like to work and what you want out of an advisor — and we match you from it. It works a little like a dating site. The point is fit, not whoever happens to be free that week.
Comprehensive. You rank your top three advisors and we do our best to match you with your first choice. You are working with this person for the entire cycle, so you should have the biggest say in who it is.
Either way, once you are matched you get a direct link to your advisor’s calendar and book your first session yourself. Advisors offer daytime and evening slots, and other times by mutual arrangement.
Can I choose my advisor?
With Comprehensive, yes. You rank your top three and we do our best to give you your first choice — this is the person taking you from your first strategy call through your last decision, so the choice should be yours.
With Primary and Secondary, you are matched from your profile rather than picking off a list. That is deliberate: matching on how you work and what you actually need tends to land better than choosing between bios.
Worth knowing either way — every advisor was hand-picked by Dr. Gray, several are former admissions officers and Directors of Admissions, and any of them can help you with MD, DO or Texas applications. May is our busiest month, so a specific request can mean waiting a week or two for a first session.
Will I have the same advisor for my whole cycle?
With Comprehensive, yes — guaranteed. One advisor from your first strategy call through primary, secondaries, interviews and decisions.
With Primary or Secondary, you have one advisor for everything in that package. If you later add the other package, staying with the same person depends on timing: add it within the window we will tell you about, and they are held for you. After that we match you on availability, because peak season capacity is genuinely limited and we would rather tell you that up front than promise it and miss.
How often will I meet with my advisor?
You and your advisor decide that together. In your first session you will map the cycle — what has to happen, when it has to happen, and where you will need the most help — and build a session plan around it.
There is no hour balance draining in the background and nothing to ration. Sessions run 30 or 50 minutes over video, and you book them yourself from your advisor’s calendar.
Students can book one live or async (essay review) session per week, and can request another session that their advisor can allow if they have the bandwidth.
Most students finish their primary application within two months of starting. If after three months, you still need more time, you will be given the option to purchase more time with your advisor.
How does essay feedback work?
Two ways, and you can mix them.
Live. You work through the draft together on a call — best in the early stages, when the question is what the essay is even about.
Written. You send the draft and your advisor returns it with in-line comments and a summary of what to change — best for later drafts, when you need close line editing.
Most students do both: live sessions to find the story, written passes to sharpen it.
How Many Schools Does the Secondary Package Cover?
For the Secondary Application Package, our students can generally cover about 20 schools directly, and with learning the feedback, can apply that to even more schools. If a student would like more direct feedback on more schools, they can discuss that with their advisor to purchase more time.
Do you write my essays for me?
No, and you should be wary of anyone who says yes.
Admissions committees read thousands of essays and can tell when a voice is not the applicant’s. More to the point, every school asks you to attest that the work is your own — and your interview will be built on what you wrote. We ask questions, push back, cut what is not working, and show you where the real story is. The words stay yours.
Are sessions recorded?
Yes! All sessions are recorded and available inside of your student portal.
What if my advisor is not the right fit?
Tell us and we will move you. It is rare, but the whole model rests on the working relationship, and nobody gains from you sitting through sessions that are not landing. Email [email protected] and we will handle it without making it awkward.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes. Pay in full or spread the cost across monthly installments, chosen at checkout. Your spot is held once the first payment goes through, and you start working with your advisor straight away — you do not wait until the plan is paid off.
Does MSHQ offer a military discount?
Yes — 10% for:
- Active-duty military
- Students at a U.S. military academy

Do you work with DO and Texas applicants?
Yes — AMCAS, AACOMAS and TMDSAS are all covered in every package, including the pieces unique to each: the Texas personal characteristics and optional essays, and the differences in how AACOMAS handles experiences and coursework. Many of our students apply to two or three systems in the same cycle.
I am reapplying. Can you help?
Reapplicants are a large share of the students we work with, and the work starts differently. Before touching a single essay, we go through last cycle and find out what actually went wrong. Sometimes it is the school list. Sometimes the personal statement never answered “why medicine.” Sometimes the application was strong and it was submitted in September.
You cannot fix what you have not diagnosed.
I am a nontraditional applicant. Is this built for me?
Yes. Career changers, postbac students, parents, applicants coming back a decade after undergrad — this is well-trodden ground for us. Dr. Gray has been having these conversations on the OldPreMeds Podcast for years, and several of our advisors specialize in it.
A nontraditional path is not a weakness to explain away. Handled properly it is usually the most compelling thing in the application.
Do you help with Casper and PREview?
Yes. Our Primary Application and Comprehensive packages includes guidance on the SJTs — which schools require which, when to sit them, and how to prepare for scenario-based questions that reward a way of thinking rather than a memorized answer.
Do you guarantee I will get in?
No. Nobody honestly can, and any admissions service that offers a guarantee is telling you something about itself.
What we control is the quality of what you submit: a school list matched to you, essays that are authentic and impactful, activities that show rather than tell, and interview preparation that makes the day feel familiar. That is what moves the odds.
What happens if I do not get in?
We keep working. If a cycle ends without an acceptance, the first conversation is an honest look at where it went wrong — and our advisors, all of whom have read applications from the committee side, will tell you plainly rather than gently.
