Note: Every class you've taken goes into calculating your premed GPA. Even if you've had classes expunged from your transcript, they need to be entered in your med school application. More about that here.
How to Calculate AMCAS GPA
- Obtain all your college transcripts.
- Enter your grades for each class into the GPA calculator below.
- Mark which classes count toward BCMP (Science GPA).
- Read your AMCAS GPA data off the charts below.
AMCAS is the American Medical College Application Service, a centralized application service which is used by premed students when applying to allopathic medical schools. AMCAS calculates two GPAs from a premed’s transcript: an overall cumulative GPA and a Science GPA (known as BCPM) including all Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Math courses. Both are important.
The AMCAS requires the input of every grade from every course taken in your undergraduate career including withdrawals, repeats, failures, and incompletes. If you had grades removed from your transcript due to extenuating circumstances, you are required to input those too. With retakes, AMCAS takes an average of the two grades for an overall grade.
According to aamc.org, “AMCAS will convert most standard undergraduate transcript grades to AMCAS grades based on conversion information provided by the institutions. The AMCAS GPA provides the medical students with a standard way to compare each applicant’s background.” Please read the AMCAS Instruction Manual for more details.
For more information about AMCAS, check out "All About the AMCAS Application." Use the med school GPA calculator below to calculate what your AMCAS GPA would be.
How to Calculate AACOMAS GPA
- Obtain all your college transcripts.
- Enter your grades for each class into the GPA calculator below.
- Mark which classes count toward BCP (Science GPA).
- Read your AACOMAS GPA data off the charts below.
AACOMAS is the centralized online application service for osteopathic medical schools. AACOMAS calculates multiple GPAs and each of these GPAs are taken into consideration for the review of your application so there is a lot more ability to show your academic excellence and any trends in an AACOMAS GPA calculation. As of 2017, AACOMAS no longer uses grade replacement and instead averages all grades and course attempts.
The GPAs that AACOMAS calculates are: one for every school attended, one for each undergraduate and graduate year, a cumulative undergraduate which includes postbac courses taken, an overall GPA which includes undergraduate and graduate, a science GPA which includes biochemistry, biology, zoology, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physics and other sciences, a non-science GPA which includes behavioral sciences, English, math, and other courses, and course subject category GPAs which include all undergraduate, postbac and graduate courses for English, math, bio/chem/physics, and other science. Math is not included in AACOMAS' science GPA.
For more information about AACOMAS, go to accom.org. Use the med school GPA calculator below to calculate what your AACOMAS GPA would be.
How to Calculate TMDSAS GPA
- Obtain all your college transcripts.
- Enter your grades for each class into the GPA calculator below.
- Mark which classes count toward BCPM (Science GPA).
- Read your TMDSAS GPA data off the charts below.
TMDSAS is the application service for applying specifically to medical or dental schools in Texas. In the state of Texas, all graduate and professional schools use the Texas Coordinating Board for Higher Education procedures for calculating GPA for admissions purposes.
For the TMDSAS GPA calculations, all academic work and grades are required. TMDSAS, unlike AMCAS and AACOMAS, doesn't use + or - grades. If you received a C-, TMDSAS converts it to a C.
TMDSAS calculates eight GPAs for your application, which are overall GPA, overall BCPM, overall undergraduate, undergraduate BCPM, undergraduate non-BCPM, overall graduate, graduate BCPM, and graduate non-BCPM GPA. BCPM includes all biology, chemistry, physics, math, and also includes courses which satisfy the prerequisite course work (excluding English). Please use TMDSAS' Course Listings for accurate classification of your courses.
For more information about TMDSAS, check out my Premed Years episode "Why Does Texas Have Its Own App and More TMDSAS Questions." Use the med school GPA calculator below to calculate what your TMDSAS GPA would be.
