The University of Alabama School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that houses one of the largest academic hospitals in the country. The School of Medicine can be traced back to the Medical College of Alabama, which was founded in 1859 in Mobile, Alabama. The first two years of medical school are completed in Birmingham, with clinical years being completed at either the Birmingham campus or any of the three regional campuses: Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, and Montgomery.

The University of South Alabama (USA) College of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that enrolled the first class in 1973. Students complete their first two years on the main campus in the Medical Sciences Building. Their clinical training is completed within the USA Health System Hospitals (University Hospital, USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital), other USA Health clinics, and in the community. 33 percent of Mobile’s physicians have been educated at the USA College of Medicine.

The Auburn Campus was built to help address the major shortage of rural and primary care physicians in the state of Alabama. The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine System boasts being in the Top 10 (according to U.S. News and World Report) for African American enrollment, Hispanic and Latino enrollment, and affordability for a private medical school.
