The University of Utah School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that welcomed its first class and began as a two-year medical school in 1905. Utah’s curriculum is shifting away from lecture toward team- and case-based learning. The University of Utah provides the opportunity for students to do research in over 22 basic and clinical science departments with over 1,000 faculty mentors to choose from. Students are also required to complete a scholarly activity to further their independent investigation. In addition, Utah School of Medicine has a program called REALMD that acts as a professional development program to help students cultivate a professional identity.

Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine Southern Utah Campus is a 4-year DO-granting program that welcomed its first class in 2017. The school has an emphasis on primary care and wants to make sure their physicians can meet the needs of a diverse patient base. RVUCOM is a military-friendly school and has one of the highest percentages of students on military scholarships. The College of Osteopathic Medicine provides a number of ways students can explore their interests in global medicine, international externships, military medicine, physician-scientist, rural and wilderness medicine, and urban underserved medicine. Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine Southern Utah was the first medical school to have and use a surgical cut suit.
