Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that was founded in 1887, although its roots go back to 1867 with Willamette University. OHSU’S curriculum is competency based and learner centered, involving multiple different teaching methods. Each student completes a scholarly project with a mentor. OHSU School of Medicine is focused on producing healthy doctors and commits time and resources to wellness. OHSU has a focus on making sure the needs of the state are met, and accordingly, over 70 percent of students are in-state residents. They have strong family medicine and rural medicine programs.

Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine is a 4-year DO-granting program that welcomed its first class in 2008. Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences has a “Recruit-Educate-Return” model that aims to accept applicants from medically underserved areas and educate them with hopes that they will return to practice in those underserved areas. Students are encouraged to take part in preexisting clubs, start their own club, or be involved in the community. PNWU-COM has a preference for applicants from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, or rural/underserved areas. They also have clinical regional sites in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. PNWU-COM has a confidential system for reporting concerns to ensure that student wellness and related issues are prioritized.
