The University of Colorado School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that started in 1883 with two students and two professors. The School of Medicine has been on the forefront of diversity from the beginning. From its inception in the 1880s, the school required women and men be accepted on an equal basis, as well as accepting minorities. CU was also the site of the first-ever liver transplant, a human chromosome classification system, and the founding of immunology. It is also where doctors revolutionized open-heart surgery. The University of Colorado School of Medicine facilitates student explorations of global health, research, rural medicine, the urban underserved, and the LEADS program (Leadership, Education, and Advocacy Development Scholarship).
