Roheet graduated from UCSD with a biomedical engineering degree and is currently in his gap year. He is in the middle of interview season, hoping to land one of the 20,000 or so seats to next years starting allopathic medical school class.
He is in a gap year because he had to reapply, not getting in to medical school his first time applying. Something not unusual these days, and something I had to do as well. He had a great MCAT score, a 33. He also had a good GPA at 3.6. So what was the biggest reason he didn’t get in the first time? Better question, what was the reason he didn’t even get an interview?

In Session 13 of The Premed Years we had the pleasure of talking to Dr. German, the Dean of The University of Central Florida College of Medicine (UCF COM). UCF COM was the first, built from the ground up, allopathic medical school in the US in almost 30 years.
It gained full accreditation this past week which is excellent! Their inaugural class is graduating this year and will find out their fate in the Match in March.

Two separate statements. When standing on their own, they are both true. When put together though, does the Caribbean make medical school a vacation?
There are currently 60 Caribbean medical schools that you can attend, as of 2011. One might think that this vastly increases your chance of being a doctor since there are only 137 M.D. and 26 D.O. medical schools in the U.S. You must understand that these schools are not all up to the standards of U.S. schools, although there are a few well known schools that have been graduating medical students for some time now, who are now successful physicians practicing all over the country.
Congratulations! You have been invited to interview for medical school. That email popped into your inbox and you responded faster than lightning. The date is saved in your calendar and you already have your plane tickets! Now, you ask, how do I prepare for this critical part of the application process? First, you should know that medical schools have various interview styles. Some interview in groups, others individually. Some know your grades and scores, while others just know your name.
