Do Your Homework With SDN Interview Feedback.
Although I’m wary of spending too much time on SDN forums (for my own mental health), the Interview Feedback section of the website is a true hidden gem for applicants. Past interviewees post about their experience, including the day’s schedule, specific questions asked, and what interviewees wish they knew beforehand. This type of information from past interviewees is an invaluable resource- schools like to use the same questions over and over to compare students. Over six different interviews, more than half of the questions I was asked were directly from this website and thus very few questions actually caught me by surprise.

Read more > >I was asked to speak at the 2013 OldPreMeds and OldMeds National Conference, their 13th Annual. The theme of the conference was military medicine and I was able to meet some great people, including the founder of SDN, Army Lt Col (Dr.) Lee Burnett.
The subject of my talk was about my journey to being a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force, including accepting the HPSP Scholarship.

Dr. Greg Polites must wander around the campus of Washington University in St. Louis with a flock of adoring fans like Justin Beiber anywhere in public.
Dr. Polites is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine. He’s also on the admissions committee and the coursemaster for the Practice of Medicine course for 1st and 3rd year medical students there.
For premeds at Wash. U, he’s the instructor for MedPrep, a course that has very similar goals as we do here at the Medical School Headquarters. Upwards of 90% of all premed students at Wash. U take the MedPrep course on their way to medical school.
Dr. Wagoner has been in medical school admissions for about 30 years. She is an expert in the medical school interview process. She shares her knowledge with us.

What an opportunity we had for this session of The Premed Years! Dr. Muller, Dean for Medical Education at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (MSSM) took some time to go in-depth with us about FlexMed.
FlexMed is the newest iteration on what MSSM has had since 1987, HuMed. HuMed has allowed college sophomores and juniors to apply to MSSM and if accepted, skip the majority of the “normal” premed requirements. This includes not taking the MCAT! This has allowed the students to follow their passions in other areas, whether it be language, writing or something else.
Dr. Muller shares with us how FlexMed is taking everything they have learned from HuMed, and improving upon it moving forward. HuMed historically has been a 1/4 of the incoming class. FlexMed looks to have that increase to 1/2 of the class in the coming years.
In 2010 Dr. Muller and others published an article (link below) in the journal of Academic Medicine showing that, for the most part, HuMed students do just as well as “normal” premed students.
