The Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that matriculated its first class in 1824. MUSC College of Medicine is the oldest medical school in the state of South Carolina. MUSC is committed to diversity and is one of the nation’s leaders in the retention and graduation of underrepresented minority students. Excluding HBCUs, they are in the top five for number of African-American students enrolled. While at MUSC, students have opportunities for research, with recently increased NIH funding. Students are involved in community outreach through the MUSC Cares Clinic, where medical students care for underinsured patients. MUSC also has a unique Senior Mentor Program that pairs medical students with people over the age of 65. Thus, this experience acclimates students to the process of aging, and it has been shown to change students’ perceptions of caring for older adults.

The University of South Carolina is a Tier-1 Research University, and the proximity of the medical school to USC’s main campus gives students the opportunity to find multiple different avenues for research. The USC School of Medicine was the first school in the nation to introduce ultrasound education into all four years of medical school. With many people in South Carolina not having access to care, USC has a rural health program initiative to help combat the number of underserved individuals in the area. The University of South Carolina also has a partnership with Palmetto Health Hospital Systems, and students complete their clinical rotations there.

The University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville was built out of the need for more physicians in the state of South Carolina. South Carolina ranks 37th for the number of physicians per 100,000 people. The University of South Carolina Greenville takes a unique approach to the curriculum: Students become certified EMTs and spend approximately 12 hours each month serving the community as an EMT. In addition, lifestyle medicine is integrated into all four years of the curriculum. Students complete their clinical rotations at Prisma Health-Upstate, the largest regional healthcare in South Carolina, and can seek out research opportunities there, as well.

Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine - Carolinas Campus

The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine - Carolinas Campus is a 4-year DO-granting program that matriculated its first class in 2011. VCOM-Carolinas Campus offers free tutoring to first- and second-year medical students. Many students take part in one of the 20 organizations on campus and enjoy spending time in the Spartanburg community. VCOM-Carolina Campus allows students to participate in both international medical outreach and Appalachian medical outreach. Students complete clinical rotations both in the community and in rural settings.
