The Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall University is a 4-year MD-granting program that welcomed its inaugural class in 1978. The JEC School of Medicine is a community-based medical school that offers students many opportunities to give back. Students often participate in medical outreach to the homeless. JEC specializes in rural health issues: Clinical training is done in rural settings, and graduates are encouraged to practice in rural or underserved areas. The small class size creates a supportive, family-like atmosphere for students. Clinical and translational research is available for students who wish to pursue it.

The school currently ranks 13th in rural medicine training. There are over 60 research labs at WVU, and they have an R1 research designation. The West Virginia University School of Medicine offers four specialized tracks for students: global health, rural health, culinary and lifestyle medicine, and an accelerated curriculum (3.5 years). Students at West Virginia University School of Medicine complete an average of 100 hours of community service by the time they graduate.

The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine is described as having a welcoming, family-like atmosphere where students can succeed and be supported. Students are dedicated to their community, with over 18,000 hours of community service being completed by WVSOM students in one year. Different learning modes are offered, and students receive clinical exposure within their first year. WVSOM has 25 global health sites to choose from if one is interested in global health.
