The Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that welcomed its first class of 32 students in 1977. The Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine takes a unique approach to their curriculum by having the pre-clerkship phase only last 1.5 years. This allows for some clinical training prior to taking USMLE Step 1. Students can complete all four years at Bryan-College Station, they can do 1.5 years at Bryan-College Station and then 2.5 years in Houston, or they can do 1 year in Bryan-College Station followed by 3 in either Dallas or Temple. The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso Paul L. Foster School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that originally began in 1973 as a regional site for third- and fourth-year medical students. In 2009, it welcomed its first four-year class. The Paul L. Foster School of Medicine has students learn basic and clinical science through organ systems and learning in the context of clinical presentations. Students receive clinical exposure within the first semester and have an opportunity to volunteer at a student-run clinic, which provides primary care to all ages. Students are also separated into learning communities called colleges where their student performance is monitored on a weekly basis. This facilitates success and provides resources if a student needs them.

The Texas Christian University and the University of North Texas Health Science Center School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that welcomed its inaugural class in 2019. The TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine has a unique curriculum with Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships, a Compassionate Practice course, and a required Scholarly Pursuit and Thesis. TCU and UNTHSC administer this curriculum through a flipped classroom approach, allowing for a flexible learning schedule. TCU and UNTHSC School of Medicine provides students with a wellness program as well as a Physician Development Coach Program that pairs students with two Physician Development Coaches, as well as a Student Success Navigator or learning specialist.

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that welcomed its first class in 1970. The School of Medicine was originally founded to train more physicians to serve the underserved population of West Texas. They pioneered the first 3-year family medicine program that allows students to complete medical school in 3 years, saving both time and money. Students have the opportunity for clinical experience within the first year. By the fourth year, students are allowed the flexibility to build their own clinical experiences based on their interests.

The University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program and the first medical school ever in the state of Texas. They welcomed their first class in 1891. In their first year, students learn the basic sciences, while in the second year they transition to studying organ systems. UTMB offers group tutoring and even has a Step 1 Mentor Program to aid students during board prep. A unique aspect of UTMB is the Osler Student Societies. These societies are completely voluntary, but they increase faculty-student interaction, mentorship, community service, and professionalism. The Osler Student Societies participate in events such as Halloween Festivals, academic competitions with proceeds going to a clinic, dinners, and a Bioethics Bowl.

The McGovern Medical School at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston is a 4-year MD-granting program that welcomed its first class in 1970. McGovern is the seventh largest medical school in the United States. With their new curriculum, students begin gaining clinical exposure in January of their first year. Students must also complete a Scholarly Concentration during their time at McGovern. Along with a curriculum that incorporates interprofessional education, students have the opportunity to complete clinical, basic, or translation research if that is something they wish to pursue. McGovern also separates students into societies that they remain in throughout their medical education. The purpose of the McGovern Societies is to maintain is a culture of wellness during medical school.

The University of Texas Long School of Medicine at San Antonio is a 4-year MD-granting program that welcomed its first class in 1959. The Long School of Medicine educates and trains the largest number of physicians in Southwest Texas, and many stay in the area to practice. The Long School of Medicine is guided by altruism, knowledge, and skills. The University of Texas Long School of Medicine at San Antonio has a Residency Round-Up for third-year students where they have the opportunity to meet alumni in multiple specialties to help them choose a specialty. Students can take part in many different clubs ranging from interest groups to student government and community outreach.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that matriculated its first class in 2016. The School was built to provide healthcare in a region riddled with health disparities and to improve the health outcomes for the people of RGV. The curriculum at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine is given through multiple different modes of instruction, including problem-based learning, cases, lab sessions, and flipped classroom sessions. In hopes of supporting students, UTRGV separates students into Academic Houses. These houses exist to creative supportive relationships with faculty, friendship, and wellness for medical students. Sessions for the Academic Houses are mandatory.

The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas is a 4-year MD-granting program that welcomed its first students in 1943. UT Southwestern is committed to diversity, and 24.8 percent of their class are underrepresented in medicine. The curriculum allows for students to pursue their own interests by offering avenues of distinction in a number of areas. The Academic Colleges allow for specialized faculty mentorship for students. There are over 100 electives for students to choose from during their time as medical students. The curriculum is given through different modes of team-based, small-group, lab, and simulation learning. Over 80 percent of clinical training is done at the Parkland Hospital. Students are also very involved in many different campus clubs. There are educational, honorary, international/cultural, recreational, religious, service, social, and student government clubs.

The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is a 4-year MD-granting program that welcomed its inaugural class in 2016. Dell Medical School hopes to educate and train doctors who are comfortable taking on the challenges of healthcare while taking care of patients. The Leading EDGE curriculum is divided into Essentials, Discovery, Growth, Exploration. Students start clerkships during second year, which is earlier than most medical schools. The Growth phase allows students to gain experiences in their personal areas of interest. Throughout the four years, courses in Clinical Skills, Interprofessional Education, and Leadership are integrated into the curriculum. Students have access to a Tier-1 research university if they are interested in pursuing research opportunities.

The School of Osteopathic Medicine was built to help meet the need for physicians in Southwest Texas and to meet the need for primary care physicians. The curriculum stresses self-directed learning and has community engagement built into the curriculum. Longitudinal Clinical Experience begins the first week of medical school and carries into phase 2. Students spend a half day in a healthcare setting each week. Beyond the classroom, the school has over twenty clubs to participate in, and you can start your own. Students also volunteer with Southside Independent School districts, San Antonio Housing Authority, Department of Health and Human Services, Texas Immunization Partnership, and Head Start.

The University of North Texas Health Science Center Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine is a 4-year DO-granting program that welcomed its inaugural class in 1970. UNTHSC College of Osteopathic Medicine has an emphasis on primary care and rural medicine. Over 60 percent of their students enter into primary care. They have an innovative curriculum where, within the first year, students are placed in one of four primary care clinics. Students also have the opportunity to do international rotations in Malawi, Russia, or Thailand. TCOM has a unique food pantry program that is an anonymous program for students struggling with food insecurity.
