Albany Medical College

Albany Medical College is a 4-year MD-granting program that welcomed its first class in 1839. Albany Medical College follows the traditional structure of two preclinical years followed by two clinical years. There is a longitudinal course throughout the curriculum that addresses current issues in medicine and problems with the US healthcare system. In addition, Albany Med students must complete a service-learning requirement before they graduate. Students participate in clinical work at the Albany Medical Center, VA Medical Center, Psychiatric Center, and other ambulatory and hospital sites.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine

The Albert Einstein College of Medicine is a 4-year MD-granting program that matriculated its first class in 1955. Albert Einstein agreed to let his name be used for the medical school in 1953. Albert Einstein College of Medicine has a commitment to ensuring each class is diverse. Sixteen percent identify as underrepresented in medicine, and 17 percent of students were born outside the US. At Einstein College of Medicine, the first two years are primarily biomedical science courses, but students begin patient experiences within the first few weeks. Students also have the option to take classes on health disparities, medical Mandarin, and medical Spanish as electives. Students must submit a scholarly paper as a requirement for graduation.

Columbia University Roy and Diana Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is a 4-year MD-granting program. It traces its roots back to King’s College, which was established in 1754. Columbia offers students the opportunity to gain their education in one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the US. There are over 70 clubs for students to be involved in at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. Around 32 percent of students go abroad at some point, and nearly 34 percent take an extra year for either research or to finish a dual degree. There are opportunities for students to be involved in the community through Columbia Student Medical Outreach, Homeless Medical Partnership, the Harm Reduction Clinic, Medical for LGBTQI Youth, Asylum Clinic, and others.

CUNY School of Medicine

The CUNY School of Medicine/Sophie Davis Biomedical Education Program is a 7-year BS/MD program that welcomed its first class in 2016. The BS/MD program is committed to increasing the number of primary-care physicians while addressing the shortage of African-American, Hispanic, and underrepresented primary-care physicians and those that serve inner-city areas. This past year, 53 percent of students in the entering class were from underrepresented populations. Students can partake in many clubs, and many students choose to live in on-campus housing. The program provides a Learning Resource Center, advising and mentoring, and an anonymous mistreatment form.

NYITCOM is committed to training lifelong learners and physicians dedicated to inner-city and rural communities. Students say that NYITCOM provides extensive resources to help all students succeed in medical school. Students also have the opportunity to rotate in one of the most diverse areas in the country, which provides excellent clinical experience. Students feel supported by the community on campus as well as by the faculty.

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine

Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine is a 4-year DO-granting program that welcomed its first class in 2007. The location of the TCOM in Harlem and rural Middletown shows their commitment to increasing the number of physicians who practice in underserved communities. They are also focused on increasing underrepresented minorities in medicine. Students at both the Harlem and Middletown campuses are active and involved in their community in a number of ways. TCOM follows a traditional structure of two didactic years followed by two clinical years. They work to create a supportive environment and provide students many ways to get involved in campus organizations.
